EPA 608 Certification Study Guide — Everything HVAC Technicians Need to Know

A comprehensive guide to the EPA 608 certification exam for HVAC technicians covering all four certification types, study tips, and practice resources.

By DispatchIQ Team

The EPA Section 608 certification is required by federal law for any technician who works with refrigerants. If you service, maintain, repair, or dispose of equipment that contains refrigerants, you need this certification. Here is everything you need to know to prepare for the exam and pass it on your first attempt.

The Four Certification Types

EPA 608 has four certification levels:

  • Type I (Small Appliances) — Covers equipment with 5 pounds or less of refrigerant. This includes window AC units, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers.
  • Type II (High-Pressure Systems) — Covers equipment using high-pressure refrigerants like R-410A and R-22. This includes residential and commercial AC systems and heat pumps.
  • Type III (Low-Pressure Systems) — Covers equipment using low-pressure refrigerants like R-123. This includes centrifugal chillers used in large commercial buildings.
  • Universal — Covers all three types. Most HVAC technicians pursue the Universal certification because it qualifies them to work on any equipment type.

Exam Structure

The exam consists of a Core section (25 questions) plus the section(s) for your certification type. You must pass the Core section plus at least one type section. A passing score is 70% on each section. The exam is open-book but timed, and most testing centers allow 2 to 3 hours for the Universal exam.

Key Topics to Study

Focus your study on these core areas:

  • Ozone depletion and environmental regulations — Understand why refrigerant regulations exist, the Clean Air Act, and the penalties for venting refrigerants.
  • Refrigerant types and properties — Know the characteristics of common refrigerants (R-22, R-410A, R-134a, R-123) including pressure-temperature relationships.
  • Recovery and recycling requirements — Understand when refrigerant must be recovered, the required recovery levels for different equipment types, and proper handling procedures.
  • Safety — Know the health risks of refrigerant exposure, proper PPE requirements, and emergency procedures.
  • Equipment and tools — Understand recovery machine requirements, gauge manifold usage, and leak detection methods.
